Frugality wins.

My brother and I have reserved Pokemon Black and White, respectively. Tomorrow, I shall be there when they open. I will have a bag full of games we’ve been saving to trade in for credit towards something else.

In addition, Gamestop has a promotion that says trade-in games towards Pokemon Black or White get a 25% bonus. Hell. Yes.

We won’t spend a dime. :3

trainertips:

Oshawott/Dewott/Samurott

Let me start this off with me saying that this is the best water-type released in BW. It is, I’d say, the most balanced of all three starters, with high offensive stats, HP, and defensive stats as well. As a result, will be the easiest of all of them to be used.

Like Tepig, its two starting moves are Tackle and Tail Whip. It learns Water Gun (7), and upon evolution (17), learns its signature move, Razor Shell (even though Shellder now learns it I’m considering it a signature move okay). Soon after, all it learns are moves that emphasis that it’s a samurai more than anything else, with moves like Fury Cutter (20), Revenge (28), Aqua Jet (33), Slash (36), Retaliate (50), and Swords Dance (57). It even has access to Megahorn if you can find a Heart Scale to get it to a moverelearner. What’s interesting about this is that it actually has slightly higher special attack than physical attack, which it will obviously make good use of with Hydro Pump (62). It also has access to Encore (38), which is more of a support move, but nonetheless useful.

As far as a TM movepool goes, it has a pretty generic water-based movepool, which isn’t necessarily bad. It has access to Ice Beam, Surf, Waterfall, Scald, etc. What’s different is its access to X-Scissor, which I only recommend utilizing if for some reason you don’t have access to a Heart Scale. You can breed it to know Night Slash and/or Air Slash if you so choose to as well.

Using this Pokemon competitively will actually be much harder to do than the other two, however. As I’ve mentioned before, there are many water-types that are better than it (Kingdra and Vaporeon come to mind first), and as a result, it will often be overlooked. The reason for this is that while it has bulk, it’s not the bulkiest, and while it has good offenses, it cannot do enough with them. It’s just too balanced, I guess you could say. Its low speed is its major setback, honestly, and it can’t even use Agility to make up for it. It can try to differentiate itself with a Swords Dance set or something (Aqua Jet, Megahorn, Night Slash), but knowing the most powerful bug move and a viable combination of a boosting move and a priority is not enough to bring it out of obscurity.

Something I should note is that while it’s able to attack on both ends of the offensive spectrum, it is not really able to do it very well. While trying to do it mixed, you usually end up having to lose something kind of vital to do so. I know if you want to use Surf on the Swords Dance set I posted earlier, you would probably look first to Aqua Jet, which is actually what makes the set quite viable, or one of the coverage moves, which could only hurt a water-type since they are so easily walled by enemy water-types.

Where it really shines is in-game, able to sweep right through teams without so much as a blink, but trust me when I say that you should look elsewhere if you plan on using a water-type competitively. There are just too many other waters out there to make it ideal.

Great summary. Let it be known that I fully agree with this post, and that I am choosing Oshawott purely for in-game play. It’ll probably never achieve a place on one of my competitive teams.

starting tomorrow, me and this little guy here are gonna FUCK UNOVA UP.
